Position Summary
The Welder II / III is responsible for independently setting up, fitting, and welding structural steel components and assemblies according to engineering drawings, specifications, and quality standards. This position requires advanced blueprint interpretation, strong welding skills, and the ability to perform complex fabrication work with minimal supervision. The Welder II/III serves as a key contributor to production goals while supporting safety, quality, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, weld symbols, specifications, and work orders to determine fabrication requirements.
  • Independently plan and execute welding and assembly operations with limited supervision.
  • Lay out, fit, align, assemble, and secure structural steel components using measuring and fixturing equipment.
  • Perform high-quality MIG welding utilizing .045 wire and other welding processes as required.
  • Select proper welding parameters, tooling, fixtures, and equipment based on project requirements.
  • Weld a variety of structural steel components in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions.
  • Evaluate fit-up conditions and make necessary adjustments to ensure product quality and dimensional accuracy.
  • Inspect completed welds and assemblies for compliance with drawings, specifications, and quality standards.
  • Utilize tape measures, squares, calipers, and other precision measuring devices to verify dimensions and tolerances.
  • Operate overhead cranes, hoists, and material handling equipment safely.
  • Identify and communicate quality concerns, material defects, or process improvements.
  • Assist in training and mentoring Welder I employees and new team members.
  • Support Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Accurately complete production documentation and quality records.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Welding certification preferred (AWS certification is a plus).
  • Welder II: Minimum 3 years of welding and fabrication experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Welder III: Minimum 5+ years of structural steel welding and fabrication experience.
  • Experience welding with .045 wire required.
  • Experience welding structural steel and heavy-gauge materials strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret complex fabrication drawings and weld symbols.

Technical Skills:
  • Advanced blueprint reading and weld symbol interpretation.
  • Strong knowledge of welding procedures, fabrication methods, and quality standards.
  • Ability to perform complex fit-up and fabrication work independently.
  • Proficient with measuring tools and quality inspection equipment.
  • Mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
  • Working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, 6S, and continuous improvement practices preferred.
  • Ability to identify root causes of fabrication or welding issues and recommend corrective actions.

Leadership Expectations (Welder III):
  • Serve as a technical resource for less experienced welders.
  • Assist supervisors with training and onboarding new employees.
  • Promote safety, quality, and productivity best practices.
  • Help drive continuous improvement efforts within the fabrication department.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, and lift throughout the shift.
  • Frequently lift and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in varying positions while welding and fitting components.
  • Ability to safely operate material handling equipment.
  • Close vision, depth perception, and attention to detail required.

Work Environment:
  • Manufacturing and fabrication shop environment.
  • Frequent exposure to welding fumes, moving equipment, elevated noise levels, and steel fabrication processes.
  • Required use of PPE, including welding helmets, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, and steel-toed footwear.
